I've wanted to come back after seeing some of the updates and features added but was already paying for 2 MMOs. Now that I'm not and RIFT is F2P I'm back and waiting to see if it's worth my $15 a month. I love the various podcasts and want to join up and play in game with others that do as well. Been almost two years since this post saw any action, but I figure it's easier to post here than to keep track of who I've told what. I can have delusions that people read it.

My main is Toiben, but tend to go by Tapkoh as an account name outside of games. Toiben was my first ever MMO character so I use that as a default name for usually my main in any game I play. In real life, I turn 29 in September. Went to college, got my bachelors in physics, learned Japanese, helped design spacecraft (little ones), went to grad school for a couple years, studied linguistics and second language acquisition, quit because it was way too expensive, and spent a couple years working as a part time pharmacy technician. Now I'm trying to start a career not as a pharm tech, but the economy and job market aren't cooperating. Somedays it's all job searching, resume (CV) revising, and applications. Other days, I refuse to deal with it and play games instead.

As for MMO history, I never played a single one until Lotro went free to play. I was intrigued when I saw Shamus Young's let's play comic on the Escapist. He said the community was more mature and not a bunch of jackasses, so I decided if I was going to try one, I'd try that. I got into the beta for f2p, created my first Toiben (dwarf guardian), and started with Toiben all over again when it launched as f2p. Been playing ever since. I currently have a guardian, warden, lore-master, and burglar at the cap of 85, though I retired Toiben the guard because wardens are much more fun. I am leader of The Sixth House on Crickhollow and for all of my time there, have been one of two or the only very active person whose main was a tank, so that's primarily what I did. Not to toot my own horn, but I'm one of the best pve wardens on the server. Hung out with a raiding alliance for a while and tanked tier 2 challenge content at the old cap of 75, but some of them were jerks so I quit. I've tanked pretty much everything in the game, most of it on tier 2. I do monster play on Brandywine, but don't play on the free peoples side since I'm not a subscriber.

There was kin drama over a year ago before I was leader and some people left to play Rift, so during a free weekend, I tried it. I'm a sucker for class systems like this where I can (in theory) mix and match so much. Tis probably why I enjoy DND-based games so much. Went back over other free events, but didn't stick around much. After I quit subscribing to Lotro, I decided to put the money toward Rift and check it out for reals. My only quibble was that dwarfs had to be guardians and I very much wanted to be on the technomage side (defiant, duh). I could make one and swap factions now at least, but that's super expensive. I have crafting alts that I use to play with people from my Lotro kin who quit playing Lotro. They're on sparingly, so I don't play them much beyond crafting anymore.

As for other MMOs, my kiwi friend convinced me to play Guild Wars 2. I have low-level asura engineer. It's fun, but I find other games more fun. I bought into The Secret World when it came out. I got to the end of the story content and tanked nightmare dungeons for a while, but it was fighting the same bosses every night and that wore me down. GW2 pretty much killed my guild there so I stopped for a few weeks, then I had a misunderstanding with some new people when I came back, and by the time it got sorted out, I just didn't feel like playing anymore. Got a few characters into their 40s in The Old Republic, but I always felt like I was being punished for not subbing. Tried DDO, but couldn't get into it. Tried Tera, but the aesthetic of effeminate men and, uh, "gifted" women missing 90% of their armor was off-putting. Played Neverwinter, but the classes are so imbalanced that 2 of their 5 are totally unnecessary (and actually detrimental) for group content. If they shape up, maybe I'll play again, but for the moment, feeling like I made a useless character because of their class design kinda kills my motivation.
